Roger Federer, who played as if he had been tranquillised in a desultory opening defeat by Kei Nishikori, then endured accusations that he has benefited from scheduling favouritism most of his career, swept away the limp challenge of Dominic Thiem in little over an hour here on Tuesday night.The impressive 6-2, 6-3 win saved the six-times champion from expulsion from the final big tournament of the season, although he probably still needs to beat a rampant Kevin Anderson in his third round-robin match on Thursday to reach the semi-finals for the 15th time in 16 visits.
